Vientiane → Vientiane
▲
Your trip begins in Vientiane, a capital that still moves at village pace. After settling into your hotel, you'll meet your guide for a short walk along the Mekong riverfront, past saffron-robed monks and the golden spire of That Luang in the distance. There's time to wander the morning market or simply watch the river before a welcome dinner introduces you to Lao cuisine, a lighter, herb-heavy cousin of Thai food with a strong French accent in the bread and coffee.

Vientiane → Nam Pien Yorla Pa
20-30 km · 100 m
▼
A short drive out of the city brings you to Buddha Park, a surreal collection of over 200 Buddhist and Hindu sculptures scattered through parkland by the Mekong. From there you swap the van for your bike and ride quiet backroads into Phou Khao Khouay, a forest reserve of sandstone cliffs and waterfalls barely an hour from the capital. It's a gentle first day, enough to find your rhythm before the terrain changes. You'll spend the night in simple bungalows surrounded by forest.

Nam Pien Yorla Pa → Thasi
50-60 km · 600 m

After a short transfer to the day's starting point, you follow the Nam Xan river east toward the Vietnamese border, through rice fields and villages where bicycles still outnumber cars. A picnic lunch is set up in the shade partway through the ride. The road rolls rather than climbs today, but it's a longer stretch in the saddle, ending in the small town of Thasi, where a simple guesthouse and a home-cooked dinner await, framed by the first karst peaks of the interior.

Thasi → Viengthong
70-80 km · 1,200 m
▼
This is the toughest day of the trip and, for many riders, the most memorable. The route climbs steadily into limestone hills that turn a deep green after rain, reaching close to 800 meters at its highest point, the roof of the entire journey. Lunch is a proper picnic in the middle of nowhere, cooked by your crew, with a view that makes the climb worth it. A long descent and a few short counter-climbs bring you into Viengthong, a modest Lao town, by early evening.
Hoogtepunten van de dag
• The tour's highest and hardest climbing day
• Picnic lunch deep in the mountains

Viengthong → Laksao

Yesterday's climbing gives way to a day of ups and downs through Laos' quiet hinterland, past small villages where children run out to wave and shout hello. Karst peaks rise on either side of the road for much of the ride. You'll stop for lunch in the open countryside before continuing toward Laksao, a town just 35 kilometers from the Vietnamese border, where limestone cliffs frame your night's guesthouse.

Laksao → Thakhek
70-90 km · 400 m

The day starts with a ride across the Nakai Plateau, past the vast Nam Theun reservoir, one of the largest hydropower lakes in Southeast Asia. Lunch is taken lakeside, on a terrace looking out over the water. From there the road undulates gently down toward the Mekong, through scenery that briefly recalls Vietnam's Halong Bay in miniature. Bikes go on the vehicle for the final stretch into Thakhek, with a stop en route at the Nang En limestone cave. You'll spend the evening looking out over the Mekong toward Thailand's riverbank.

A relaxed, mostly flat ride on quiet back lanes takes you south to Savannakhet, a riverside town with a slower pace and handsome French-colonial shopfronts. It's an easy day in the saddle, good for taking in the details of rural Lao life along the way. In town, an evening stroll through the old quarter rounds off the ride before dinner.

A short transfer brings you to today's starting point, from where you ride across flat terrain and through simple settlements toward the Mekong's southern reaches. Don Khong Island → Don Det Island
30-40 km · 100 m

A short ferry crossing takes you off Don Khong onto Don Som, an island rarely visited by outsiders, where narrow tracks wind through rice fields and small villages. Children still turn out to wave as you pass. After around 20 kilometers of rougher riding, a second Mekong channel crossing brings you to Don Det, where you'll pass the old French colonial railway before reaching the thundering Khone Phapheng Falls, the largest waterfall by volume in Southeast Asia. Your hotel for the night has a pool right on the river.
Hoogtepunten van de dag
• Two island ferry crossings in one day
• Khone Phapheng, Southeast Asia's largest waterfall by volume

Today swaps pedals for a private boat as you explore the channels and backwaters of the 4,000 Islands, a maze of rice paddies, fish traps and fishing villages that the Mekong carves out before the Cambodian border. The rest of the day is free to relax by the water or wander Don Det's small riverside restaurants.

After breakfast, a boat back to the mainland connects with a transfer toward Pakse airport, stopping en route at Tad Fane, twin waterfalls that drop more than 120 meters over the edge of the Bolaven Plateau, Laos' coffee-growing heartland. A short flight brings you back to Vientiane, where a stop at a mine-clearance information center offers a thoughtful look at the country's wartime history before a farewell dinner in the capital.
