Thai Basics for your Bike Trip in Thailand

When cycling through Thailand, especially when going off the beaten path, you'll notice that many locals don't speak English. But worry not, just a few simple Thai words can open doors, create smiles, and turn a good ride into an unforgettable memory.


We've prepared a short list of basics , friendly Thai sentences that will help you connect with people along the way.

Greetings & Thai Basics Politeness:🙏🏻

  • Hello: Sawasdee khrap (male) / Sawasdee kha (female)

  • Thank you: Khop khun khrap / kha

  • Yes: Chai / No: Mai chai

  • Excuse me / Sorry: Khor thoht khrap / kha


🔍There isn’t a real word for "please" in Thai, instead, you add kha (for women) or khrap (for men) at the end of your sentence or request. These are actually politeness particles.

Practical for the Road and Biking:

  • Bicycle : Jak-gra-yaan

  • I need help: Chuai duai

  • Flat tire: Lod bao

  • Repair: Soom

  • Where is the toilet? : Hong naam yuu thii nai ?

  • Where is...? ...yuu tee nai ?

  • Where is the water?: Nam yuu thii nai ?


Good to Know:📝 Locals are often eager to help, especially when you try to speak Thai, even if it’s just a few words!

  • How much: Thao-rai ?

  • Is it spicy? : Phed, mai ?

  • Not spicy: Mai phed

  • Fried rice: Khao pad

  • Chicken Gai

  • Vegetables: Pak

  • The food is delicious! : Aahaan a-roi maak !


Creating a Real Connection with Locals:

  • Beautiful village: baan suay

  • You are kind: Khun jai dee

  • I'm cycling: Pom / Chan pai jakayan (homme/femme)


🌟 Showing interest in the culture and saying a few words in their language is often enough to spark a conversation, even with gestures!
