ABOUT THIS TOUR
River deltas and village hospitality
When visiting Bangladesh, you will live a journey like no other, eat food you had never tasted before (yes we keep it safe, and we always have food alternatives handy if you wish), discover crafts that are still practiced like they were centuries ago, and meet people that only want to welcome you in their amazing country!
Bangladesh reveals itself through a vast network of river channels and rural lanes that see almost no international tourism. This cycling trip begins in the chaotic density of Old Dhaka before moving into the worlds largest river delta. The terrain is consistently flat, dominated by the water-rich landscapes of the South.
The narrative of this cycling adventure is built on social interaction, as the local population frequently invites riders for tea and conversation. The path leads past traditional brick factories and ancient craft workshops, providing a raw look at a country defined by its rivers. This bicycle journey is for those seeking a deep cultural connection in a landscape few outsiders ever visit.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is this tour designed for?
▼
Curious, culturally motivated travelers who want to experience a country almost entirely absent from the usual Asia travel circuit. It suits first-time tourers, older cyclists, families, and anyone who values genuine encounters over physical challenge. Note that accommodation may be extremely basic so one must be mentally prepared for it; this is the price of true adventure.
What makes cycling in Bangladesh unique?
▼
Bangladesh has virtually no mass tourism infrastructure, which means the encounters here are authentic: traditional crafts still practiced by hand, food you will not find anywhere else, and communities that genuinely welcome visitors. As a cultural cycling tour in Asia, it is genuinely unlike anything in Thailand or Vietnam.
Is the itinerary fixed or flexible?
▼
Several routes have been scouted and the itinerary is tailored to the group's fitness level, interests, and the season. This is closer to a custom cycling tour than a fixed departure: contact the team directly and we will build the most suitable route around your group.
What is included in this tour that other tours do not offer?
▼
Airport pick-up and drop-off are included, unusual in the LocalRoutes catalog, along with a guided visit to Old Dhaka, one of the most densely layered urban environments in Asia. The fully guided, all-inclusive format reflects the logistics of cycling in a country where independent travel requires more local knowledge.
Are there any specific cultural considerations for traveling in Bangladesh?
▼
Yes. Alcohol is not served on this tour out of respect for local culture. Dress modestly, particularly when passing through rural villages and markets. The team briefs all guests before departure. Bangladesh is an overwhelmingly welcoming country for respectful visitors: local curiosity about foreign cyclists is genuine and warm.
What is the Hidden Bangladesh Backroads tour?
▼
We build the itinerary around your group, but it typically starts in Dhaka: chaotic, overwhelming, and completely unlike anywhere else. Two or three days on foot and by rickshaw through the old city gives you a sense of the place before the riding begins. Then we head south by boat into the delta, where the roads are quiet, the islands are flat, and the rhythm of the day is set by the river rather than any itinerary. We stop when something interesting happens, which in Bangladesh is often. Rated Easy on distance, but rich in everything else.
