We meet today on the train platform of Thonburi Station. After a short briefing about the bikes, the itinerary and the guiding app, you escape the hustle and bustle of Bangkok by taking the train to Kanchanaburi. The province is famous for its Bridge Over The River Kwai which you will visit along with the War Museum and Cemetery. You then ride towards your hotel and take a dip in the pool if you wish to cool down, before hopping on your bike again onto tiny little backroads, zigzagging between rice fields, banana plantations and little village houses. You enjoy a slow leisurely ride during the golden hour. You finish the day at the hotel restaurant by the river.

You start the day with a short ride to the train station, buy your ticket and get onboard for a breathtaking journey on what is now historically known as the Death Railway. We suggest you seat on the left side of the train to get the best views of the river Kwai Noi along the way. Once you reach the last station of Nam Tok, a beautiful and peaceful ride awaits! You take your time meandering through the countryside, riding on a mix of tiny tarmac alleys and beautiful, easy dirt roads. You go through sugarcane plantations, cassava and eggplant fields, fruit orchards growing pomelo, banana, pineapple, etc. in between towering karst peaks. You then head towards a simple yet cozy homestay where you may attend a cooking class given just for you, if you arrive early enough!

After a great breakfast, you set off today and keep exploring the countryside and the amazing landscapes the region has to offer. You ride on dirt and paved roads, through plantations and little villages. You head towards the renowned Krasae cave, a tiny temple sheltered into the cliff and opening straight onto the railway. Take time for a visit and a stroll along the rails offering magnificent vistas. You'll head back to Bangkok after lunch or cycle first to Prasat Mueang Sing. Note: if you want a longer day, we recommend riding to visit the ancient Khmer temples of Prasat Mueang Sing, adding an extra 25 kms.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a good first cycling tour?
▼
Yes. At 32 km per day over flat to gently rolling terrain, it is one of the most accessible self-guided bike tours in Thailand. Short riding days leave plenty of time to explore historical sites at a relaxed pace.
Can this tour be combined with another LocalRoutes tour?
▼
Yes, and we recommend it. The River Kwai tour works well as a warm-up before a longer Thailand cycling holiday, or as a standalone add-on for travelers spending a few days outside Bangkok. An option is also to add 1-2 days in Amphawa region to experience canal life away from the main tourist areas nearby. It's absolutely stunning, we highly recommend it!
What historical sites does the route cover?
▼
The tour rides past the Bridge over the River Kwai, along the Death Railway, and visits Krasae cave. An optional extension takes you to Wat Prasat Muang Sing, a Khmer heritage temple at the edge of Kanchanaburi province.
What kind of roads does this tour use?
▼
A mix of quiet backroads and dirt tracks through farmland and jungle. This Thailand backroads cycling tour deliberately avoids the main tourist road between Kanchanaburi town and the bridge, keeping to local lanes where you are unlikely to share the road with tour buses.
What is the best time of year for this tour?
▼
Late October to February is ideal: dry, cool mornings and comfortable afternoon temperatures. The Kanchanaburi region is particularly lush in the weeks after the rainy season (October to November), when the river is full and the farmland is green. The tour runs year-round except for April-May when temperatures in the region are way too high.
What is the Cycle by the River Kwai tour?
▼
A 3-day self-guided cycling tour in Thailand covering 32 km per day with 267 m of climbing through the Kanchanaburi region. Rated Leisure and the shortest tour in the LocalRoutes catalog, it is a natural first step into multi-day bicycle holidays in Thailand and a great way to experience the region away from the crowds.
